The Triceratops was a three-horned herbivore that walked on four legs. It lived during the late Cretaceous period. It was first discovered near Denver, CO in 1887. The name Triceratops means 3-horned face.

Although the triceratops has three horns, only two were functional. the third was made of soft proteins. Scientists are not sure what the purpose of the third horn was. The typical triceretops was about 26 geet long, with it’s skull being around 1/3 of the length. It wrighed betweem 6 and 12 tons, and was about 10 feet tall.

The average Triceratops had 400-800 teeth over its lifetime! It does not use all of these teeth at one time, instead it replaced worn out teeth with new ones.
